The Cost of Outsourced Active Learning: AI's Impact on Understanding

In our latest podcast episode, we examine QF Academy’s recent experiment on the negative effects of AI-powered note-taking in education, particularly within intensive bootcamps. The episode highlights how students who rely on these tools often demonstrate only surface-level comprehension, consistently missing the subtle but essential nuances conveyed verbally by instructors (who may have an accent!).

Of course, we believe that note taking apps will eventually improve as underlying AI models become more advanced. However, no matter how sophisticated they become, they are unlikely to replace the cognitive benefits of active participation, real time questioning, and deep engagement with the material, especially in technical subjects where subtle nuances often make the difference between true understanding and superficial recall.
